Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

Mike Grocott will talk about the historic forthcoming mission of Tim Peake, the country’s first government sponsored Astronaut. Tim will be flying to the International Space Station where he will spend 6 months living and working as part of Expedition 45. Mike will give a brief overview of Tim’s mission as well as illustrating the challenges of a Mars mission.
Mike is the first Principal of the Space Studio Banbury - the country’s only Space school targeted at 14-18 year olds with a passion for science, maths and business. The school’s ethos is to ensure students have the academic, and more importantly, the soft skills of communication, problem solving and team work to be successful in either business, apprenticeships or for those who wish to go to University.
Previously, Mike taught at Callington Community College in Cornwall where he set up the Callington Space Centre which he managed and led in addition to his role as an Advanced Skills Teacher for Physics. 
Through his work Mike was appointed as an Educational Space Ambassador for the European Space Agency, he recently returned from teaching at ESA’s European education seminar in Njordvick Holland. Mike is an educational advisor and sits on the grants panel for UK Space Agency's 'Space for All.'
Prior to becoming a teacher, Mike spent 12 years in the Royal Navy completing a full engineering apprenticeship, before leaving to start a second career in teaching.
