Make a Will Fortnight 2022

Brethertons Solicitors invite you to participate in, and benefit from, the support we give to Katharine House Hospice Make a Will Fortnight (3 to 14 October 2022). Please contact any one of our three offices in Banbury, Bicester or Rugby to learn more about this wonderful initiative.

We are delighted to confirm that the campaign has raised over £120,000 (including Gift Aid) with over 500 wills written in the 10 years since the inception of Make a Will fortnight.

Our Solicitors Sarah Horton, Jules Mackenzie, Amber Morris and Nakita Smith are volunteering their time and waiving their usual fees in place of inviting our clients to make a voluntary donation to Katharine House. This is a great opportunity to have your Will completed to the highest of standards by legally qualified and highly experienced specialist lawyers.

This provides Katharine House with an immediately realisable benefit, and Katharine House also ask our clients to consider leaving a gift in their Will, which is one of the easiest ways to support a charity.

Gifts left in Wills make a huge difference to charities, and it couldn’t be easier. Charities are grateful for any type of donation, so you could leave them a specific sum of money, a specific item or a share of your estate.

Partner in our Wills, Trusts, Capacity and Probate Department, Sarah Horton said: “We support this initiative every year as it is so important to write your Will to ensure your assets are shared as you wish them to be. Of course, it is also a simple and effective way to raise vital funds for our local hospice”.

Leaving a gift in your Will might also benefit your estate if it is taxable. Gifts left to charities in a Will are inheritance tax (IHT) free. Additionally, if a person leaves at least 10% of their estate to charity, the IHT charge for the parts of the estate not left to charities (or your spouse) is reduced from 40% to 36%. Not only will it give you that warm reassurance that you have taken care of things properly, you could also reduce the IHT bill for the rest of your beneficiaries too!

When leaving a gift in your Will, it is vitally important to quote the charity number, so that there is no confusion about which charity you intend to gift to, if the name of the charity changes over the years. One of our solicitors will take care of that when you meet them.

Whether you are considering making or amending a Will, making a donation to Katherine House Hospice, leaving a gift to charity in your Will, or incorporating some charitable gifting with a view to making some IHT savings, come and talk to us about your options. Our friendly and approachable Wills, Trusts, Capacity and Probate team are ready to take your call on 01788 557722 or email sarahhorton@brethertons.co.uk
