Helping SpecialEffect level the playing field

  • Posted

I was delighted when in April the staff at Brethertons chose SpecialEffect as its Charity of the Year. The charity has a profound impact on the lives of the people it supports, helping disabled people play games, by providing and adapting technology. One of SpecialEffect’s Vice Presidents is technology reporter, speaker and author Kate Russell who sums up things nicely, “Gaming is often dismissed as a frivolous waste of time. But when you see first-hand the joy it gives families struggling to deal with a degenerative disease or life-changing accident of a loved one, bringing them together in an act of fun and allowing those with limited body-control to play on a level field with friends and siblings, it’s hard to deny that the little slice of normality it affords is having a massively positive impact on the whole family.”

We’ve already kicked off our fundraising efforts with a competition on the launch of our new website (£500 raised) and a Quiz & Curry Night (£770.) We have other events planned including a whole week of “dress down” (with Friday 21 August culminating in a day of “Fancy Dress”) A Great Brethertons’ Cake Off, a gala dinner and an evening of stand-up with Cotswold Comedy Club on Thursday 22 October at The Windmill Community Centre in Deddington.

In May 2016 four of our staff (as yet unidentified) will be joining SpecialEffect's biggest fundraising event yet: The 2016 Twin Town Challenge. TTC16 will see 100 cars costing less than £500 drive from Witney to its twin town of Le Touquet and back via Brands Hatch and Croix en Ternois. It is not a race but a series of twelve fun point based challenges that are guaranteed to ensure participants have lots of fun, a once in a lifetime experience and make lots of money (the target is £250,000) for the charity. There are a few places still left so, if your business fancies joining up, register your interest quickly.

Be sure to check out SpecialEffect’s You Tube Channel where you’ll find some excellent two-minute videos that show what they do; that will go some way to explain why they’ve captured the imagination of everyone here at Brethertons.

If you’d like to find out more or join in with any of the fun please contact me or Marie Parkinson.
