Rugby Does Rugby - How the game has changed

For the first time in the history of the Rugby World Cup, this Autumn the town of Rugby will host an official Fanzone, along with 11 host cities across England and Wales.

To celebrate the return of rugby to its home town we at Brethertons are excited to have arranged a special commemorative breakfast! On the morning we’ll host representatives to share their stories and experiences, offering a true reflection on how the game has changed throughout the ages.

Ex-England rugby legend David Duckham combined grace & power to become one of England's finest wingers. He famously captained Coventry in 1972-3 & 1973-4 (Centenary Year) who were winners of the RFU National Knockout Cup (now called the Worthington Cup) in both seasons. Specialising in scoring tries from broken play, the Coventry winger made an instant impact on his international debut scoring a try against Ireland in 1969. He was capped 36 times for England but his genius was truly evident in the British Lions team with his record breaking six try display in a single match on the 1971 tour. In 1977 David was awarded the MBE for services to rugby. David will talk to guests about how he got into the sport, and his thoughts on how the game has changed since the height of his career.

Current England under 21 and Northampton Saints player, Tom Stephenson is often said to be one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from the Saints Academy in recent years.  Tom has already had a considerable impact both at Franklin's Gardens and representing his country. Playing a year above age for England Under- 18s, he not only captained the side, but played a vital role in ensuring they returned home from the FIRA/AER tournament in Madrid as champions. A former Moulton College student, Tom has a blend of pace and power that has proved almost impossible to stop. His senior appearances have included stunning tries against Newcastle and Gloucester, and also in the Aviva Premiership Final. Tom will give guests an insight into what it takes to become a top-ranked player in today’s modern game.

It’s your chance to put your burning questions to the experts in an exclusive Q&A session. At Brethertons, our brand identity is to share 'The Knowledge Within' and these two players will certainly continue this theme.

Our charity of the year, SpecialEffect, will be joining us and showcasing the gaming technology the charity uses to brighten the lives of those living with disability. Guests can experience the equipment for themselves and we encourage you to pit yourself against friends and colleagues in a fun leader-board competition! SpecialEffect will also host a special rugby-related auction with fabulous prizes.
