Partner and Head of Family Law, Rugby
Emma is a paralegal in our Serious Injuries team. She assists Head of Practice Area and Partner Jon Rees, and Senior Associate Allison Fitchett and Associate Sian Buxton in most aspects on all cases.
The way the team works so all members of the team are involved in helping progress all cases is unique. It plays to the strengths of a niche practice. It means each member of the team is able to meaningfully help all clients. Obviously the quality of communication lines with clients and their families following life changing injuries is vitally important and Emma’s central role in that is valued by her colleagues and clients alike.
Emma has worked with the team for nearly 10 years, starting first as a legal secretary and then becoming a paralegal. She has recently obtained her Chartered Institute of Legal Executive (CILEx) Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice (Civil Litigation with Law of Tort) which she studied for in her spare time.
Emma has extensive experience of helping people who have suffered life changing injuries through the litigation process and more widely where she and the team help clients connect with a range of professionals both within our practice and outside. Emma is often involved in making introductions to and liaison with colleagues who can help those we are assisting where they might need help with estate planning, conveyancing and also employment or family law advice.
Emma has assisted in every aspect of the litigation process from beginning to end. Emma is an important part of the team’s success and has contributed to cases being resolved in seven and eight figure sums. Emma has made a personal contribution in almost all of the cases that the team has concluded since the team formed just before she joined it – a combined compensation value close to £100m (lump sum equivalent).
The team’s particular expertise and experience in helping people who have suffered spinal cord injuries is well recognised. In addition to helping on spinal cord injury claims, Emma also assists in Fatal Accident claims, brain injury and amputee claims. The team defines itself by the injury rather than the cause or type of negligence it arises through. Emma is experienced in assisting on life changing injuries claims arising from road traffic collisions, accidents in the work place or public places and clinical negligence.
Emma is passionate about helping to make a real difference to people who have their lives impacted by very serious injuries.
Emma says, ‘I feel so fortunate to work alongside colleagues whose sole purpose and passion is to improve the lives of seriously injured people. The work we do is so important in helping to set our clients up for the brightest future possible. I am proud that I work in a team that go above and beyond to help our clients and the wider community by supporting charitable organisations and offering access to peer support, benefits assistance and financial advice. It’s a real joy to hear from clients after their case has finished just how much of a positive impact their settlement has had on their lives, and that just continues to inspire us to help more and more people.’
