Taking on staff

Ways of recruiting staff have transformed in recent years. But one thing stands firm: whichever channel you choose, there will be processes and legalities.

Changes in the law have meant that employers must tread carefully, not least in the way they advertise jobs, shortlist and select successful candidates. Allegations of discrimination are treated seriously, and it’s not uncommon for businesses to unwittingly get things wrong. We’re here to make sure you don’t.

As employment law specialists, we get involved in customers’ recruitment, from helping to design policies around equality to drafting employment contracts. Our team is experienced in guiding employers around pitfalls, keeping you on the right side of the law from the point at which you decide to recruit, through to the induction of your new member of staff.

We’ll advise on any business immigration issues around workers from outside the EEA and on the questions you should and shouldn’t ask during interviews. We’ll also make sure that your existing contracts and policies are legally compliant and effective, protecting your business for now and for the future; it’s part of our business audit service.

Recruitment is about finding the right person for the job, and engaging them on the right terms. It’s a two-way street, increasingly involving negotiation. As part of this you might need to think about offering enhancements in terms of bonuses, shares and commission arrangements, as well as securing terms which give you the control and the safeguards you need. Getting this right takes careful thought and strategic planning in the context of your business as a whole.
