Happy new financial year!

  • Posted

I hope it is a successful one for everyone.

This week has been a historic one for Brethertons. We have seen the retirement of Richard Pell; our Senior Partner and the last solicitor to hold the title. I wish Richard well in his retirement.

At Richards retirement party last Friday I realised we had missed a trick in not keeping in touch formally with our retired partners. I read recently about the importance of nurturing “ambassadors of the firm”. Our best ambassadors are those who have worked for the firm, or indeed owned it, at one time or another. So my new financial year resolution is to get my new younger partners to know my old former partners better.

Another event to celebrate for Brethertons was that two of my professional management partners who have been Management Team members for some years (and who had the sense many years ago not to train as solicitors!) have joined the equity partnership. They are now (for their sins) law firm owners. Having two partners who did not train as lawyers, now owning part of the business, is a truly historic event for Brethertons. Welcome on board Deborah Atkins (HR Partner) and Alison McCormack (Client Services Partner).

Alison and Deborah each bring a huge amount of non legal professional business management expertise to the partnership - expertise that our business certainly could not do without.

I have blogged before about how important a role I believe professional managers play in a law firm. I want to recruit more!  I can’t wait to interview and welcome new talent into our business.

In fact, only last Wednesday I had lunch with my new COO who is in Oxfordshire house hunting. She joins Brethertons next month - another “non lawyer” joining the Brethertons team at Board level….and I, for one, can’t wait!
