Building your career at Brethertons - a new Brethertonian

Iftakhar Ahmed is an Executive Lawyer and Solicitor in our Residential Conveyancing team, Bicester. We caught up with Iftakhar to get an insight into his time so far at Brethertons, his ambitions for the future and his opinions of the firm as a place to grow his career.

1. When did you join Brethertons?

I joined Brethertons in September 2017. I was working for a top regional firm and had been qualified as a property solicitor for nearly three years.

2. Why did you choose to join Brethertons?

I got the impression that Brethertons was very different from other firms. I have worked in companies where the career path is unclear and uncertain and it strikes me that here it is so transparent; I know exactly what I need to do in order to climb the ladder of success. In most other firms, it really is about ‘who you know’ but here at Brethertons, if you work hard and achieve all of your key result areas (which we call KRA’s), you will be rewarded. In addition, a work life balance is really important to me as I have a young family and Brethertons are here to support me in my personal life too.

3. What do you enjoy about your role and being at the firm?

I definitely feel like I am part of a team and have a sense of belonging which is great. At Brethertons, we have a number of values and one of them is ‘Each Other’ – this means that in a team, we value the contributions made by one another and treat each other with respect. We work independently and as a team and this is what I love most about my role. There is no micro-management – you can organise your own day how you need to.

4. What opportunities are there for you to develop informally in your role?

I feel I am in the right place because of the people I work with. My colleague Steven Neasham has so many years of experience and I want to be a ‘sponge’ soaking up as much knowledge as I can whilst working with him. Brethertons also encourages networking which is something I have done on and off for a couple of years but, now I feel I am in the right place to develop not only as a lawyer but also as a person.

5. Where do you see your future going at Brethertons?  How will you get there?

This might seem bold at this stage but I see myself reaching the top in years to come as an LLP member. Here at Brethertons we have role profiles so we know exactly what we need to do in order to get to where we want to be. There is nothing stopping me achieving that except myself. If you have the ambition and drive, Brethertons will support you all the way.

6. What is the highlight of your time at Brethertons so far? 

It is surprising that in the short space of time I have been here, I already have too many highlights and really cannot single out which one is the biggest for me! From learning new technical expertise to networking at various events, achieving five figure billing and being involved in the activities run by our Corporate Social Responsibility committee (which I am a member of). I am sure as time goes on and my career at Brethertons progresses, I will have many more highlights to mention.

7. How would you describe the culture at Brethertons?

I mentioned earlier that at Brethertons we have values and these values summarise our culture. We are ambitious and want to be the market leader in legal services. We pride ourselves in putting our customers first – so it’s no surprise that we receive so many instructions through customers referring their friends and family to us. We also value each other and this is absolutely paramount for a pleasant working environment. The atmosphere is relaxed but we get the job done.

8. If someone is considering applying to join Brethertons, is there any advice you would like to share?
