Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day - 15 May 2015

The Spinal Injuries Association is running its own social media campaign #mymilestone to highlight spinal awareness all this week. Check in on the SIA website and on Twitter for a glimpse of some of the incredible stories of the milestones that those living with spinal cord injuries achieve each day.

Every 8 hours someone in the UK suffers a spinal cord injury; an injury that will change their lives and the lives of those who care for and about them, forever.  That is 3 people today, tomorrow, and the next day. Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone at any time.

The spinal injuries community is a comparatively small one. It is suggested that there are perhaps 35,000 people living with spinal cord injury in the UK. That's a relatively small number. Especially when you consider there are just under 12 million people registered as disabled in the UK. So those with spinal cord injury number just 0.3% of the UK's disabled population; that is less than 0.05% of the UK population as a whole.

Outside the spinal injuries community people know very little about spinal cord injury. Those with the injury and their families and friends soon learn.  All who have suffered the injury can benefit from the tireless work of a number of charities including the Back Up Trust, Aspire and the Spinal Injuries Association all of which are joining in the twitter campaign #SCIAwarenessDay.

We are particularly proud of our partnership with the Spinal Injuries Association and to sponsor their Peer Support Workers Paul Rhodes and John Leonard in their fantastic work with patients and their families.

So do follow the #SCIAwarenessDay and #mymilestone hashtags for some inspirational stories.

I would also take this opportunity to point you to the Life in a Chair blog written by one of our very own clients, Ify - who continues to inspire us.

We are pleased to support Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day 2015.
