Preparing For Your Wedding/Civil Partnership

You have met the man or woman of your dreams and you are looking forward to your big day.  It is an exciting time.  We don’t want to take away from the excitement but hope that the following will help you to reflect on the gravity of the steps you are taking together and make you think about how to plan for and protect your future.

  • Make a Will or update your Will.  Getting married or entering into a civil partnership will automatically revoke an existing Will.
  • Make a Will in contemplation of the marriage or civil partnership so that it remains valid even after the event.
  • Consider pre-nuptial agreements.
  • Plan for Inheritance Tax mitigation.
  • Protect your home.
  • Protect your children, especially if there are children from earlier relationships.
  • If you are buying property together, consider whether you need a formal agreement to record your different contributions.
