CIPD Rare Appointment to Law Firm Partnership

Regional Law firm Brethertons LLP believes it has become the first firm in the UK to admit a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development to become a Partner in a solicitors practice.

CIPD member and Head of HR, Deborah Atkins became a Brethertons LLP Partner on 1 April 2011.

Deborah joined Brethertons with extensive experience in Human Resources including management roles at M&S, Boots and HSBC.  At Brethertons her role as Partner incorporates sitting on the firm’s Management Board and also playing an active role in strategic planning, staff development and staff consultation throughout the firm.

The Legal Services Act allows lawyers and non-lawyers to jointly own and manage legal firms.

Brethertons was one of the first firms in the UK to make a non-solicitor a Partner when its Finance Director, Trevor Dyer became a Partner in 2009.

Richard Pell, Brethertons’ Senior Partner explains: “Deborah has worked extremely hard over the past five years since joining Brethertons, to support, develop and grow our practice. Her promotion underlines and shows the firm’s faith in her ability, business acumen and experience of the legal marketplace and how much we value the extensive experience of qualified professionals from non-solicitor professions, bringing a greater depth of management knowledge strategically at Board level.”

Deborah Atkins confirmed: “I am delighted to have been admitted to the Brethertons Partnership. We are a people business. We are a law firm that employs people to solve the problems that others face. I believe that CIPD members have a great deal to offer the legal profession and I am extremely proud to be one of those leading the way.”
