It used to be so simple.  If you wanted a property from which to trade, you built or bought it and that was that.  But today, concerns about pollution and quality of life mean that using a property for your business can be a very fraught affair.  Sometimes it seems that everyone who could be interested may be trying to stop your plans.  Build an office with a car park and you’ll be told that you shouldn’t be encouraging people to drive.  Build it with little or no parking and you’ll be told that you’re causing parking problems in the main road.   Make it modern and people will say it doesn’t fit in the area.  Make it look “heritage” and you’ll be told it uses too much energy.

Buy the wrong property and you may find yourself liable to clean up the pollution caused by the previous owner and that might be on top of the complaints from the local area about your own use of the premises and the bad effects it’s having on them.
