Brethertons First to Appoint a Non-Lawyer Partner

Following yesterday’s change in legal practice legislation, Brethertons is pleased to announce the promotion of Trevor Dyer to Partner of the firm, strengthening five offices in the firm’s regional network and bolstering ambitious plans for growth.
Measures to improve the service that legal firms can give to consumers came into effect today as part of the ‘Legal Services Act’.

Different types of lawyers and non-lawyers can now jointly own legal firms, after restrictions on the way that firms operate were removed – for the past 186 years, only qualified solicitors have been able to obtain Partner status, now law firms in England and Wales can have non-lawyer partners making up to 25% of the firm.
Trevor has had to go through a stringent vetting process imposed by the legislation. According to the Solicitors Regulation Authority Trevor is now one of only 14 people in England and Wales who has been approved to be a non-solicitor partner amongst the 10,000 law firms in existence.
On leaving Northampton Grammar School Trevor went straight into the legal profession initially training as a legal executive and then retraining as a legal accountant. He spent 12 years working for Northampton firm, Howes Percival before moving to Brethertons in 1991.
Trevor is Brethertons’ Finance Director, he sits on the firm’s Management Board and is also Head of Administration leading a dedicated team of Finance, IT, HR, Marketing and Office Services professionals. He also plays an active role in strategic planning, client relationship development, staff consultation and risk management throughout the firm.

Last year, Brethertons moved up the Legal 500 table of UK law firm from 331 to 221 place, has won the Banbury Business Awards Innovation category, been awarded IIP accreditation and has experienced successful expansion in a recession year yielding 10% growth.
